Discovered through an audition in Orange County California, Amber (who is Chinese-American) was recruited SM Entertainment in October 2007. She began to train with her fellow future bandmates: Sulli, Krystal, and Luna, in early 2008. She debuted with f(x) in 2009, with the single LA chA TA. She often criticized and praised for her style for being to masculine. Amber is friends with KARA’s rapper and lead vocalist Nicole, and HyunA from 4minute.

•Is often compared to Super Junior’s Dong Hae and SHINee Jonghyun. The three have created “The Dinosaur Family”

Amber Liu, auditioning for SM under their Global Auditions in 2007, singing M.C. the Max’s “My Heart Cannot Go Any Longer Like This” and K.Will’s “Left Heart” , passed the auditions and started training early 2008.

She’s always taken an interest in Hip Hop, taking a liking to Linkin Park since young. She copied Mike Shinoda plenty and had a lot of friends with the same interests, so grew up practicing free-styling.

When she first heard Korean music, she listened to a lot of R&B artists, such as Wheesung. These days, she listens to Yoon Mirae (big fan of Yoon‘s), Tiger JK and Epik High.

When she first came to Korea, she left like a stranger, because of the environment much different then that she was used to. She would often space out and think “Why am I here?” but with the help of her band mate, Krystal, gradually adopted. Other band mates helped as well, with Luna teaching her me to sing and dance and Sulli growing a brother-sister like relationship with her.

Her boyish image was something she wasn't aware of. “In the States I was... just normal.” she stated. Shocked while a trainee, she would often hang out with Krystal and many would mistaken her for Krystal’s boyfriend. Another incident would include band mate, Victoria, in that when Amber entered a female restroom, the cleaning lady shouted at her to get out, Victoria having to clarify that Amber was indeed a female. Because of her boyish looks, she has a lot of female fans, but she is very thankful for having them like her so much and that she didn’t know they would be okay with someone like hers.
